| How to use System Restore in Windows XP |
| This guide will show you how to restore your Windows XP system to a previous state, fixing harmful changes such as a bad program or hardware install or restoring settings that have been changed. Windows uses a program called System Restore to make these changes, using restore points on your computer, to restore your computer to a normal without losing recent documents, e-mail, and Internet history. |

1. To get to the System Restore utility, click START, followed by Control Panel, as seen circled in red above. |
2. This will open the control panel in Category view (blue background). If you're using Classic view, click on the Switch to Category View link located in the upper left corner of the window. Click on Performance and Maintenance, as seen in the red circle above. |
3. Click on System Restore link, located in the upper left corner of the Performance and Maintenance window to continue. |
4. This will open the System Restore utility. Make sure that the Restore my computer to an earlier time is selected, as shown in the example above.
Click NEXT to continue. |
5. Next, you will need to select a date that the machine was known to be problem free. If you're unsure when the last known working date was, select a week roughly prior to when the problem began.
Once you're happy with your date selection, click NEXT to continue. |
6. This will take you to the Confirm Restore Point Selection window. Be sure that the restore point that you selected in the previous window is noted under Selected restore point. Additionally, be sure to read all of the information contained in this Window, as it will prepare you for the next step.
Click NEXT to continue. |
| 7. Windows will now restore your computer to the known working state based on the date that you selected during the setup process. Windows will need to restart your machine to continue the process. Once Windows has completed the system restore, you can once again use the applications that you were having problems with. |
